Don't Look Back Jennifer L Armentrout Books

Sammy wakes up bloodied and battered with no recollection of where she is, or how she got there. This is further confounded when she can't even remember her name, or who she is. Her family arrive at the hospital to reclaim her and that doesn't jog her memory. Her brother Scott, his girlfriend Julie and Carson the sorta-boy-next-door all try and help her to piece back the memories of her life. She discovers that she wasn't a very likable person and quickly realizes this is a 'second chance' that most don't get.

Her best friend Cassie is still missing and her body is subsequently discovered prompting the police to begin a murder investigation, with Sammy prime suspect.

Her parents have a non-existent relationship and the family atmosphere is tense, heightened by Sammy's obvious distaste towards long-term boyfriend Del and some serious crushing on Carson. She quickly discards the majority of her so-called friends, who are in the main nasty and bitchy.

Sammy's mind is playing tricks on her as she suffers hallucinations/visions, surges of memory/recollections, eerie images of dead Cassie, and mysterious warning notes that are left in close proximity.

It's no secret that I'm a massive fan of JLA's writing and I adore the Lux, Covenent and Dark Elements series. This is the first contemporary novel I've read from JLA and while I thoroughly enjoyed it, it didn't hook me as much as the other books did. The romance is quite muted compared to her other novels, and I missed that. Because boy can JLA write great romance scenes.

However, she has deftly developed the mystery/suspense theme within this novel and as a reader, you constantly wonder whether Sammy is being told the truth by those around her, and continuously ponder who is trustworthy. I did guess the culprit pretty early on - the clues are subtly embedded throughout the story - but I constantly questioned myself, and switched my mind a few times.

The writing was sublime, and the pacing bang-on, as usual. I don't think the dialogue was as engaging as normal, lacking the humorous/satirical element that is regularly found in her fantasy books, however I felt the characters were a bit more unique and individual as a result.
I finished this book in less than 24 hours, and that says it all really.

Don't Look Back Jennifer L Armentrout Books Reviews

Let me get my praise rant out of the way. Jennifer L. Armentrout is simply the best overall contemporary writer in YA literature. She has enormous range, creates the best characters with wonderful stories. Others may be as good as she is, but no one surpasses her. Her stories are addicting and she never fails to deliver a very entertaining read.

Don't Look Back is a murder mystery involving Sam, a high school mean girl and her best friend, Cassie. It's also a book on second chances. Setting this book in a high school with was brilliant. Sam's character is unbelievably complex. Her twin Scott, his girlfriend Julie (Sam's former bestie) on one side; Del, Veronica, and Candy, the mean elite on the other make for a well-rounded cast. Then there is Carson....he's one of the good guys, but he gets to stand alone in all of his wonderfulness!

The plot was full of unexpected twists and turns. I love trying to solve the mystery, figure things out before the main character does, and it's usually simple. With this book I was side by side with Sam. I figured it out minutes before the reveal. This proves Jennifer's skill of story-telling. The book has a complex storyline, so many side stories (like real life) that all figure in to the main story. This makes for a really solid story. The descriptions were incredibly detailed; it takes first POV to a new level. You can't help but get caught up in the suspense. Tension runs so high after a certain point, that it becomes impossible to put the book down until the thrilling reveal. Definitely recommend this one!
This was a quick read. Mysterious. And the type of well written narrative I’ve come to expect from Jennifer L. Armentrout. A welcome change from the long, intimate and angsty titles she also writes.

I’ve been in the middle of three other books for a while, and though they are interesting and I’m enjoying them, my progress was sputtering and needed a novel that I could get through quickly, fast paced, and a story to keep me hooked – ‘Don’t Look Back’ was all that. And thank goodness, staved off the possibility of falling into a reading slump.

I liked the aspect with memory loss, how Sam, our protagonist, was a blank slate and able to re-invent herself, leaving the mean girl she was behind. Her love interest, Carson is also another great excuse to indulge in ‘Don’t Look Back,’ gorgeous, loyal, and a voice of reason.

I was frustrated for much of the book, though, as Sam struggled to fill in the gaps of her missing memories. I’m kind of over the whole I have amnesia plot line. It’s overdone. To compound my dissatisfaction, Sam was a little dumb. She dismissed clues too easily, didn’t push and ask questions, and ignored her instincts most of the time. It was infuriating. I was so close to screaming at the book for her to wake up and do something. So I guess Sam engaged me really well – even if it wasn’t in the best way possible. And to that effect, I did not relate to her all that easily, but I loved the mystery she was trying to puzzle out.

The other thing that irked me is that I had guessed the entire plot very early on in the book. It was like I’d already read a summary somewhere. I don’t know if I picked up on the clues without difficulty, or if the narrative did a poor job at setting up the story, but it was difficult to really immerse myself in the novel when the plot was so glaringly obvious.

But I have a soft spot for Jennifer L. Armentrout. I have fallen in love with so many of her other books. I love her writing style – it has an easy tenor, and she manages to round out the cast members, giving them fantastic back stories. She is an expert at building tension and angst and always has a hunky love interest.

‘Don’t Look Back’ had shades of the television series ‘Pretty Little Liars’ and ‘The Lying Game’ so if you enjoyed those – this will be right up your alley. I’m on the fence if I’d recommend it though. It’s written in a tone for younger audiences, so possibly tweens would get much more out of it than I did.
