Kiss Crush Collide Christina Meredith Books

For anyone who has ever found themselves on the road more-traveled and realized, midstep, that it was not by their own choosing and that they're in danger of living a lifetime of regret - for what was and for what could have been, this book is a must-read. I do agree the cover art is misrepresentative of the story contained within. For this is no spicy teen romance. It's a perfect representation of the suffocation and fear experienced by someone who has allowed what's expected of her to define her constructs such as "love" and "success" and "happiness".

When she pauses long enough to actually listen to herself and notice the stark contrast between what she is living and what she REALLY wants for herself, the main character realizes she must choose between being the driver or just riding along, but also realizes her choice will will have grave consequences from those who have always done the driving.

I've read every Sarah Dessen and Christina's plain-spoken style does, indeed, compare, weaving a compelling tale that demonstrates that "having it all" can often carry the weighty burden of expectation.

Those who criticized the lack of Duffy's character development completely missed the point of the book.

Christina is a genius in her own right. I am waiting for the next one. Chris, if only you'd have written this before 1994!

Kiss Crush Collide Christina Meredith Books Reviews

Rating 3.5

The Low Down They are the Johnson sisters; three blondes, all in a row. Certain things are done in certain ways and those certain ways are honored. There are clear unspoken expectations; but for the youngest, Leah, they are starting to feel more like a prison sentence than a goal. Yorke, the eldest, is getting married to her college boyfriend, a carbon-copy of her own father (and the boyfriends all three girls have dated); Freddie is getting ready to graduate high school and spend the year abroad in France (after she chucks her high school boyfriend, just like Yorke did); and as Leah gets ready for her senior year, she know what lies ahead (since her two sisters have gone before her) dating Shane, Homecoming Queen, Valedictorian.

Her parents' expectations are clear; they make the decisions, continue the traditions, preserve the family honor. But what if Leah wants to alter her path? What if doing what was done before isn't good enough?

Best Thang `Bout It This book was hypnotic from the shink shink shink of the mother's ever-present bracelets to the sisters moving in predetermined lanes. It is a lazy feeling, though one that is coupled with being immersed in jello and unable to get out. It is not until Leah steps out of the expectations and is actually spontaneous that things start to change in her mind. She's already started questioning things, but the catalyst to her change is the freedom, the emotions she feels when she's with Duffy. Her life is a pre-planned one, and she'd like a little more leeway.

Since Leah never makes her own decisions, she doesn't know how to handle Shane; instead of breaking up with her parent-approved boyfriend, she chooses to ignore him. While those who read Young Adult for the cleanliness and pristine virtues of those involved, reality gets my vote every time. There are too many questions to answer before she can even think about leaving Shane what will her parents say; Shane is in the wedding; does Duffy like her like that; what about the plans for senior year; etc. etc. Shane does not deserve to be cheated on; but what Leah chooses to do is compartmentalize that part of her life so she doesn't have to deal with it. Cool? No. Real? Absolutely.

Leah knows everything that is expected of her, and all three girls usually fall into place where and when they are supposed to. They've been in these positions for so long that the mother barely needs to nudge them or arch an eyebrow. But Leah is feeling left out of her own life and wants to make some of her own decisions. It's now or never.

The Bottom Line A really wonderful story about finding your way, standing your ground and enjoying the the drive on the way to where you want to go.

I must say something about the cover. I think it's horrible and doesn't properly evoke the contents. It looks like a standard sexy teenager cover that was not well thought out at all. I think it tells another story completely.

To put it simply, I was bored out of my mind. I'm still not even entirely sure how I managed to finish this one, but let's just say I skimmed about 40 pages somewhere in the middle.

The characters were fairly shallow and boring. I knew next to nothing about them. For one thing, Leah is the main character and narrator, and yet still I know hardly anything about her, other than her narration was pretty dreadful to read through. For the first fourth of the book, most of her time is spent summarizing things about the past. (Which meant - YAY! MORE BORING!) I feel like she has next to no personality. Shane, Leah's boyfriend, is the same way - I know pretty much nothing about him, and if he has any type of interesting personality, it's hidden far too deep for me to ever find it.

And Duffy . . . I don't even know what to say about him. He's certainly more interesting than anyone else in the book, but not by far. The relationship between Duffy and Leah is pretty ridiculous, if you ask me. All he does is drive her in a car and suddenly she's making out with him. I think they probably have a total of two or three real conversations in the entire book - where they talk about things that are actually important. Life. Their relationship. Whatever. Their conversations are always extremely short, too. I just never got anything from them.

I think a big part of the reason I didn't like this book is because I can't relate to Leah. For one thing, I've never been in anything like the type of situation she's in, but for another, her emotions just didn't come across for me. She felt cold and unemotional, and that's probably why I resented her so much. I just didn't feel anything.

I will admit that I did like the family dynamics, maybe because it's so unlike my own family. Those were parts I actually enjoyed reading through.

Overall I thought I was going to like this. And I guess I can understand why some people would - there's plenty of romance and some interesting interactions. But this book just couldn't hold my attention. 2 stars.
This book was one of those books that was pretty short. I really don't like on how it starts out with Leah's life and then all of a sudden, this random guy shows up. There really has to be something to back up a guy in a book, so yea... Short, but the plot was kind of cool...
I found that this book ad no plot. I kept reading each chapter waiting for it to get better and it didn't.
this book is awesome!!!! i bought it after reading some of it in a sampler!!! it is wonderfully written!!! i loved it
