One Whisper Away Ladies in Waiting Emma Wildes 9780451233974 Books
I've been re-reading all of this author's books in my library (39 incl short stories) and have enjoyed them all again. This little gem was overlooked by me and I'm now placing it in my favourites folder. The thing is that Ms Wildes is known for her erotic writing, which is the stuff I merely tolerate but she writes a good love story. I find her main characters interact in such a romantic way. In this story the main characters meet when the h accidentally has a glass of champagne knocked over her bodice. The H reacts and uses his handkerchief to mop up the spill - lol. This causes a minor scandal especially since he whispers something in her ear immediately afterwards. These two cannot stay away from each other and the title of the book tells it all. So sweet. The H is unusual because although his father was an Earl, his mother was half French and half native American. He's quite the character and he also has an illegitimate daughter who lives with him and he dotes on her openly. There is a secondary love story between the h's sister and one of the h's ardent suitors. Lots of heartache for the poor sister but it all works out.Tags : One Whisper Away: Ladies in Waiting [Emma Wildes] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. <b>Click here for Emma Wildes' brand-new novella, available as an exclusive eBook!</b> Lady Cecily Francis is resigned to become the wife of Lord Drury,Emma Wildes,One Whisper Away: Ladies in Waiting,Berkley,0451233972,Romance - Historical - General,Historical fiction,London (England) - Social life and customs - 19th century,Love stories,Love stories.,Man-woman relationships,Regency fiction,Regency fiction.,Regency novels.,AMERICAN HISTORICAL FICTION,AMERICAN LIGHT ROMANTIC FICTION,FICTION Historical General,FICTION Romance Historical General,FICTION Romance Historical Regency,Fiction,Fiction - Romance,Fiction-Romance,General Adult,MASS MARKET,Monograph Series, any,Regency novels,Romance,RomanceHistorical,Romance: Historical,United States, romance; historical romance; regency romance; historical; marriage; victorian; family; relationship books; relationships; relationship; romance novels; novella; books for women; suspense; 19th century; fiction; fiction books; romance books; historical romance books; historical fiction books; historical fiction; historical fiction novels; regency; england; medieval; love; 18th century; love story; pirates; pirate; romantic; mystery; espionage; romantic suspense; revenge; adventure; gothic; british history; western; coulter; twins; drama, romance;historical romance;historical;regency romance;romance novels;love;romance books;historical fiction books;historical fiction novels;historical fiction;fiction;alternate history;novels;fiction books;historical novels;books fiction;books historical fiction;historical romance books;regency romance books;england;medieval;relationships;victorian;mystery;relationship books;pirates;relationship;espionage;books for women;romantic suspense;drama;marriage;pirate;fantasy;spy;family;revenge,FICTION Historical General,FICTION Romance Historical General,FICTION Romance Historical Regency,Fiction - Romance,American Historical Fiction,American Light Romantic Fiction,Regency novels,Fiction,Romance: Historical,Romance
One Whisper Away Ladies in Waiting Emma Wildes 9780451233974 Books Reviews
Jonathon, Earl of Augustine is the son of an English aristocrat and daughter of an Indian chief. He comes to England to settle his father's estate when he dies. Jonathon has every intention of going back to America once his business is sorted but in the meantime he meets and is very attracted to Lady Cecily Francis. Cecily is also very taken with the "Savage Earl" but she is almost engaged to Lord Drury. Cecily and Jonathon fall in love but many barriers have to be overcome before they can have their 'happy ever after' including the scandal of Jonathon's illegitimate daughter, his resentful yet ruined sister, an aggrieved almost fiancée and the attitudes of the ton to a "half-caste".
I agree with the other reviewers who say that this is a subdued start to a new series. There was a lot that Wildes could have done to set this book on fire, not least making it a lot harder for Cecily and Jonathon to have their HEA in light of his heritage. To be honest, I got a tad bored half way through and nearly gave up reading it. But I am glad I stuck with it because it turned into a nice little romance which I enjoyed. I gave it four stars because Wildes did not follow the current trend of wild sex scenes by page three.
As a stand alone this book is only so-so, but I think its merits come in that it is setting up a series that sounds like it will be fun. I'm hoping that Jonathon's sister Lilian gets a true hero in the next of the series Twice Fallen Ladies in Waiting.
Emma Wildes is a great writer, I loved this book but it was not up to the standard of her previous novels and short stories. It just missed being a 5 for me.
The previous reviews give a great synopsis so, I'll just state my view of this book.
The characters were clearly defined but not as believable as I would have liked. The protagonist was very easy to spot. I liked the storyline and Cicely's love for her sister was mature and understandable. Her parents and her 1st suitor - not so much. Jonathon's American background was not at all believable, he was a great hero and definitely a hunk but he did not come across as part Iroquois. The author did indicate that he was raised in Boston by his aunt.
The resolution was quick and easy, the ending seemed a bit rushed. I liked the sub-plot that involved her sister.
I did enjoy the story, all in all its a great read, just not up to her usual standards.
Enjoy it! I did!
This book started out well enough; a devastatingly handsome earl of mixed american ancestory nicknamed "Earl Savage", meets heroine at a ball after she spills champagne on her bodice. He proceeds to mop it up with his handkerchief in front of everyone at the ball, which was pretty shocking behavior. The heroine, Cecily, is immediately attracted to the handsome earl, and Jonathan is also attracted to the heroine. Unfortunately, physical attaction is about the only basis for their sudden "love", because they barely know each other before they both believe that they are in love. I really am struggling to finish this book, because I just don't feel the chemistry between the characters, and worst of all, the hero and heroine are really one-dimensional and just, well boring. I was more interested in the background romance story between Cecily's sister and Lord Drury.
Save the cash, don't buy this book. Save your time and don't even check it out at the library.
I won't sumamrise the story but suffice to say that it is a good story compared to others I have read lately. The characters are all likeable. I have to say that parts of the story could have been developed more, like the story between Cicely's sister, Eleanor, and the object of her affection Lord Drury. Ms Wildes managed to get the formular and the characters right in "Lessons from a Scarlet Lady" where there were two love stories and both were great and complete.
Anyway I still like her writing style compared to other writers recently so am looking forward to this series.
