I first started reading this series, several years ago and got all the way to the last three books and stopped,I just didn’t want to catch up,I wasn’t ready for it to end....But now as I really re-reading this series,I . Don’t . Know. Why ? Anymore....
Sooo this is my third book in the series to re- read at the moment ,and while I’m sure me and my tastes have changed and expanded since I last read these books,I’m wondering what I missed the first go round ....
I mean I love these sweet, kind and noble Vamp.s and the sense of family I know is/was created here in this series,( and if your picky like me a good series Vamp. or otherwise can be hard to find)but ...
But the heroines in this series waffle and see-saw back and forth ,”He’s ,sexy and kind and decent and sweet,O My! But he’s a Vampire! O no!
Back and forth and back and forth enough to make a saint cuss, and doubt his religion ....
All the while doing some of the dumbest ( dog poop) calling them TSTL seems like an understatement .....
While these supposedly strong “alpha” type vamps., just kinda say “Yes,Dear, and and do what ever their moronic heart desires, because these strong almost emo Vamp.s don’t want to tick off the woman their starting to love ....
BS!
Heather, heather, Heather, ( deep sigh) , I loved her the moment she started talking about the insanity of the prices an the ridiculous sizes of the gowns, she was a hoot! She felt like a woman I would have happily enjoyed a long chat or a spontaneous friendship with just on her opening commentary alone,I’m from a state next door to Texas and she felt soo real and familiar,I was thrilled....
I could almost hear her voice in my head, she reminded me of a storyteller I once saw on YouTube telling her story, called “Rollercoaster of cool” about her exp. in Dallas in the 80’s,just right blend of humor and snark...
But sadly she had to destroy it by being another ungrateful TSTL.... beaver... ( can’t swear here, what does a beaver build )...
Heather is supposedly a high school history teacher and wanna be designer and mom to and adorable 4 yr. old lil girl, soo “war on fear “ or not tell me which part of that qualifies her to go off toting a gun in a purse to try and hunt down a know killer and assassin ?
Huh ? Yeah me either ....
If Jean-Luc tried to stop this foolish foolishness,he’s what ?
He’s being controlling like her ex? What the F? Seriously ?
Ok,never had the privilege of being a mother, but what caring mom is going to leave her 4 year old behind to go and hunt down a killer, that *shakes head* Texan or not * thinks it’s her right to go track him down ,( she already thinks both him and Jean-Luc are immortal) when he’s a known killer ,but berates herself for missing a few moments of her daughter singing on the 4th because she was kissing Jean-Luc ?
Seriously ? Foolishly risking my life chasing a killer ,I have no business doing is ok,but missing a few minutes of my daughters singing isn’t ? Last night I could have gotten killed and made my kid motherless but I’m fighting fear ,aaaaaaaaa...
No,calling BS!
Then after spending the WHOLE FREAKIN BOOK,kissing her read and treating her and her daughter like much adored ad protected princesses, that beyotch has the absolute nerve to slap JL and call him a monster ,after he tells her he loves her but is a Vamp.... Seriously? You hypercritical beyotch? He’s the monster ? It’s ok if he’s an immortal highlander ? But if he needs blood to survive ,even from a bottle he’s the monster ?
Look in the mirror sister , for a man to be this loving and kind and generous with heart and soul and money and your treat him like that ? Your the monster not him .... and you wonder why he was afraid to tell you...
Geez, I liked Jean-Luc but Heather walked all over him,and he looked weak to me and after a whole book of build up Lui/Louie our “bad guy” was very easily dispatched at the end....
I still think I like the series as a whole, but weak supposedly strong men and stupid acting thoughtless prejudiced women are making me wonder why...
Not bad but definitely not great and if I were reading this for the first time now ? I can’t see myself completing the series AT ALL...

The Undead Next Door Love at Stake Book 4 Kerrelyn Sparks 9780061118456 Books Reviews
I've really been enjoying the Love at Stake series (I'm up to book 5 now).
This book (#4 in the series) isn't as good as the 3 preceding. There was just too much sex (or talking about sex or thinking about sex) and not enough plot.
I would have preferred for Jean-Luc and Heather to have built up a relationship a bit more slowly instead of immediately wanting to get in each other's pants. There really was very little "suspense" in the love relationship. it was blatantly obvious where it was going to end up. So once it got there, the novelty had already worn off.
I still like the story line of these books. The world the author has created has been great fun and I want to see more of it. And I love some of the very humorous dialog. When does Fidelia get her own book? I thought she was a real hoot. But maybe because she's not a young, incredibly beautiful, well built woman, she's not going to get her day in the sun (or dark, as the case may be). That would be a shame, I'll bet there are plenty of Vamps out there that aren't young looking and beautiful that would make a great match for Fidelia!
So my suggestion to the author is for a better balance between world building / plot and the romance. After all, the creative part of these stories is the world they live in. The sex is something that is only exciting when you really care about the people involved.
Exiled to Texas, French Vampire Jean Luc needs to retreat from the world for at least 25 years, and then return as his own son. That's the problem of not aging and living publicly with mortals. Then he meets Heather and everything changes. Unfortunately his nemesis Lui, has found him after more than 100 years, and Lui knows about Heather.
Danger, love and a vampire mortal match are in the balance as Heather decides what she really fears.
This book was excellent, exciting, & suspenseful because you didn't know when the bad vampire would make his move.
Jean-Luc Echarpe, the famous designer had to move to a little town in Texas because he had lived to long in Paris to attract attention to the fact that he was not aging. While there he not only found a new designer to mentor but he also found the love of his life & a new family.
Heather Westfield has lived in her little town all of her life & has just ended a bad marriage; when her friend Sasha, who is a famous model took her to the opening of a new designer dress shop opening in their town. While she was there she knew that she couldn't afford any of the items in the store but that she could make a couple of those dresses that were there for herself but with some adjustments for her size. As she was sketching out her design Jean-Luc who was behind a two-way mirror saw her & thought that she was copying his designs for a competitor & went to confront her. Their confrontation was filled with sparks; but once he saw her designs he decided to show her his workroom & offer her a job. While in the workroom one of his oldest enemies showed up & tried to kill him; but Heather didn't run away like he told her & now his enemy, Lui, thought that Heather & Jean-Luc were romantically involved & said that he would come back to kill her & then Lui left.
Now in order for you to find out what happens next you'll have to read this book for yourselves. This book has some jealous old friends of Heather's, an ex-husband the goes around saying that he's a cockroach, a friendly werewolf & some make out scenes among other things. So, as I said above this was an excellent book.
